Irish Aid Support
After the publication of its 2009 Annual Report yesterday, Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Ireland would like to acknowledge the support of Irish Aid in funding our projects at home and overseas.
Since our establishment in Ireland in 2002, HFH has partnered with Irish Aid, and its predecessor Development Co- Operation Ireland, on numerous projects around the world. In 2005 HFH was awarded funds to build shelters with communities in Sri Lanka who were displaced by the December 2004 tsunami and Civil War.
Currently, HFH Ireland receives funding from the Civil Society Fund Ireland, through Irish Aid, for an Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project in Zambia. The project aims to mobilise and build the capacity of the local community to construct and rehabilitate shelter and latrines for 280 OVC and their families. 300 OVC caregivers are being educated about HIV/AIDS issues, how to care for and support their families and on inheritance rights so they can create wills to protect the interests of surviving spouses and children. Legal title to individual plots of land is also being secured to ensure stability and security of OVC beneficiary families.
In Ireland, last year Irish Aid funded our Development Education programme for Transition Year students. This programme allowed students to become aware of the complexity and interconnectedness of poverty issues on a local and a global level, explore the Millenium Development Goals and Ireland’s role in their delivery, and embrace cultural interaction and challenge stereotypes.
We recognise the valuable work Irish Aid does. We urge the Government to protect the overseas aid budget from further cuts and to ensure Ireland meets the UN target of spending 0.7% of our national income on overseas aid by 2015.
