HFH Ireland Volunteer Wins Prestigious Helping Hand Award

Kathrina Bray (22), a trainee solicitor from Westmeath has been chosen by Barnardos as their Helping Hands award winner for 2008 for her work with Habitat for Humanity Ireland in Paraguay.

Kathrina was one of a group of 15 people from all over Ireland to travel to Encarnacion in Paraguay as part of the international volunteer scheme, in August of 2008. This was Kathrina’s fourth Global Village trip having previously worked in Zambia, the Philippines and Ghana. 2008 was the first time that volunteers from HFH Ireland have been to Paraguay, and the trip was an immense success, the group built two houses in the space of ten days.

After receiving the award Kathrina spoke about the reason for her on-going support of Habitat for Humanity Ireland:

This year’s trip to Paraguay saw us travelling for over 24 hours and visiting 4 different airports, but its was all worthwhile when one saw the joy, the excitement and the appreciation on the faces of the new homeowners when they were presented with the keys to their new home, which brought with it the hope and expectation of a new and better future for them.

Habitat for Humanity Ireland would like to congratulate Kathrina for her well-deserved award and hope that she will continue to volunteer with us long into the future!
