Irish Aid and the OVC Programme
In response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, Habitat for Humanity has developed a programme to improve the lives of affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.
Irish Aid is contributing generously to this project donating €540,000 over 3 years to the programme in Zambia. This money will help:
- Build homes for orphan-headed families (Target – 280 OVC families)
- Extend or renovate guardian households to provide more room for an extended family
- Provide succession planning and inheritance rights training (Target – 560 Caregivers)
- Apprentice youth in construction trades to enhance employment prospects
- Educate communities about HIV/AIDS prevention and care, as well as options for insurance and savings (Target – 560 caregivers).
HFH Ireland sent 2 volunteer teams to Zambia this year and aims to send 3 next year and 4 in 2010. These teams will assist in the physical construction of homes in the OVC programme in Lusaka and Ndola and raise on average €9,000 per team.
