Have you ever thought of volunteering in Africa? Now is your chance! Do something different for the summer and volunteer in Zambia from the 7th – 21st of July 2012.
- Zambia has one of the highest incidences of poverty in the world with 68 percent of people living in extreme poverty.
- Approximately 87 percent of the people live on less than US$2 a day.
- Poverty has remained more prevalent in rural than urban areas (80 percent and 34 percent respectively).
- The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Zambia is 14.3 percent (2007) and the country was ranked seventh among the most affected countries in theworld (UNAIDS) in 2008.
- The epidemic has significant gender biases. More women are living with HIV and AIDS compared to their male counterparts.
Volunteering in Zambia
You are invited to join Habitat for Humanity and travel to Zambia in July 2012. You will be working alongside other volunteers and community members to build decent, affordable houses.

Volunteering in Zambia
Day 1: Team meets at Dublin airport and departs.
Day 2: First day in Zambia. Your team arrives in the morning and is met by a Habitat for Humanity Zambia representative – they have breakfast, orientation and travel to Ndola.Upon arrival there is a welcome ceremony by the Affiliate communities when the team gets to meet the chiefs and local people. The team then set-up their rooms in the local house for the night ready to start building in the morning.
Day 3-8: Your day starts at 6.30am – the team gets-up , cleans, has breakfast and goes to the site to meet the family and start working in partner on a new home.
The work day is from 8:00am to 4:00pm (with regular breaks)
There are also evening cultural activities set-up – sing songs, dancing all around the camp fire outside your house.
Day 9: The team will spend the day getting to know the local area – seeing a football match, going to a concert, going to see the local gospel choir
Day 10-13: Back to Building!
Day 14: Half day work on-site and the dedication ceremony official handing over the home to the family you have been building with.
Begin your travel back to Lusaka – Overnight stay at the Guest House
Day 15: You say goodbye to Lusaka.
Volunteering in Zambia
To get on the trip:
1) Apply online
2) We will give you an initial call
3) We will meet you to speak about your expectations
4) You will need to pay €250 deposit (which then goes towards the fundraising target)
5) You are a member of the team!
You will need to fundraise approx €3,400 which will cover donation to Habitat for Humanity (€900), flights, accommodation, food, local transport, pre-departure training, weekend activities and comprehensive insurance.
