Third-level Volunteers of 2016

Words can’t begin to describe how welcome this community made me feel from the very first day with their song and dance at every possible occasion!

Sharon Murray, NUI Galway Habitat volunteer, Zambia

This year, third-level students from around Ireland travelled to Zambia to build homes and hope alongside local families in the communities of George and Twapia.

“We were made to feel a part of Miriam’s family. My fondest memory is of the moment Miriam was given her keys.” Ciara Larkin, Law Society of Ireland

“The joy of the new homeowners was worth all the time and effort put into this trip. I could not be happier that our group was able to contribute something to this great community. The attitude towards life shown by the members of the George community was truly remarkable, and it is something that I will do my best to learn from.” David Meenan, University College Dublin

Owning a home provides a significant level of economic security as well as a place in which a child may study, a parent may set up a small business and a family can live a healthier life. Being a Team Leader was an incredibly rewarding experience.” – Mark Finn, Trinity College Dublin

‘Law in Action’ Workshops

Law students from the Law Society of Ireland and NUI Galway teams also used their legal knowledge to deliver three Inheritance Planning and Will Writing workshops. This training was aimed at increasing knowledge of the importance of will writing to protect women, and the orphans and vulnerable children in their care, from property grabbing.

“Leaving a written will simplifies matters after death and makes sure that your property passes on to those people that you want to inherit it.” Ruth Mottley, Law Society of Ireland

“The community’s hunger to learn about matters such as how to prevent property grabbing in the event of a homeowner’s death was something that could only be described as infectious.” – Sharon Murray, Law student, NUIG
