Big Build 2020
Habitat’s Big Build is taking place in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe where over 76% of the population live in slums. In 1 week, we will build 10 homes, supporting our Orphaned and Vulnerable children programme.
Join us for this special week! Build beside the local community, witness the life-changing impact of a simple home and inspire others to join the cause of safe shelter.
Supporting Habitat’s Work
This year, Habitat volunteers are sponsoring the cost of all 10 homes. Therefore the budget to take part is €2,900 per person (this includes a non-refundable deposit, travel, insurance, orientation materials, in-country expenses, a debrief and a minimum donation towards Habitat’s work).
There are lots of ideas and resources to support fundraising. Volunteers must be clear about what the funds raised will support.
Participants must be over 18.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 Depart Ireland, arrive in Malawi & Orientation / Welcome Dinner

Need to Know
Where will I stay?
Accommodation will be clean and safe; usually a modest hotel or guest hours. Local Habitat staff will organise transport to and from the work site.
Where will I eat?
You will have the opportunity to try local food but in most cases you will have access to food you will familiar with too!
Bottled water will be provided to keep you hydrated. If you have any allergies or specific requirements, please include this in your application form.
What will I be doing?
There are a variety of tasks you could be laying bricks, mixing cement, moving materials, installing doors and windows or put up the roof.
Whatever you do, you will build relationships and new hope for the future. You don’t need any previous experience; in-country Habitat staff will be delighted to welcome you and all sites are fully supervised.
Jika’s story
Since the death of both her parents, Jika (18) has been looking after her little sisters, Lucy and Dora. Life was tough living in a small, unsafe hut. A simple Habitat home has changed everything for the family; they are safe, healthy and hopeful for the future.
