I went away with the hope I would help those less fortunate than myself,

only to realise that they gave me more than anyone could understand.

Volunteer in Malawi in 2019 with volunteers from across Ireland to support Habitat’s work with orphans and vulnerable children.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. 4 out of 5 families live in poorly built homes made of mud bricks, dirt floors and grass thatched roofs. Homes constantly need repair and families are at high risk of disease.
The poorest are worst affected, including the 1.5 million children who are orphaned or vulnerable, largely as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
For thirty years, Habitat has been one of the few organisations in Malawi dedicated to improving the living conditions of families in need.
Funds raised in Ireland support Habitat Malawi’s work, most recently serving 7 families in need. This holistic programme includes building safe homes and facilitating training on HIV and malaria prevention with families like Bertha’s.
Volunteer in Malawi next summer with volunteers from across Ireland to support this life-changing work. This is a unique opportunity to experience grassroots development and be uplifted by the warmth and resilience of the Malawian people. Volunteers will:
SEE the shocking reality of poverty housing
SERVE families in need
SPEAK out for the cause of safe, decent housing when they return home
Habitat co-ordinates everything for a safe and rewarding experience. You don’t need special skills to take part.
Day 1-2: Depart Ireland, arrive in Malawi & orientation
Day 3-10: Build and closing celebration with the community
Day 11-12: Cultural activity & depart
Dates & itinerary dependent on flight availability.
Supporting Habitat’s Work
The budget to take part is €2,900 per person (this includes a non-refundable deposit, travel, insurance, orientation materials, in-country expenses, a debrief and a minimum €900 donation towards Habitat’s work).
There are lots of ideas and resources to support fundraising. Volunteers must be clear about what the funds raised will support.
Need to know
Where will I stay?
Accommodation will be clean and safe; usually a modest hotel or guest house. Local Habitat staff will organise transport to and from the work site.
What will I eat?
You will have the opportunity to try local food but in most cases you will have access to food you will be familiar with too! Bottled water will be provided to keep you hydrated. Include allergies or specific requirements in your application form.
What will I be doing?
There are a variety of tasks you could be laying bricks, mixing cement, moving materials, installing doors and windows or put up the roof.
Whatever you do, you will build relationships and new hope for the future. You don’t need any previous experience; in-country Habitat staff will be delighted to welcome you and all sites are fully supervised.
What age do I have to be to take part?
You must be 16 and over to join the team. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or can join a Youth Build. If you are older than 75, get in touch to discuss insurance.
Since the death of both her parents, Jika (18) has been looking after her little sisters, Lucy and Dora. Life was tough living in a small, unsafe hut. A simple Habitat home has changed everything for the family; they are safe, healthy and hopeful for the future.
‘Not even in my dreams did I imagine living in house like this. We have shelter and feel safe and secure. Thank you.’ Jika Letson (18), Habitat Homeowner, Malawi
